Security While Traveling
SECURITY DURING YOUR TRIP
- Wear waist security belts that hang inside your pants or other type that is not visible and split the money between you.
- Keep your passports in the same security belt.
- Also place a copy of our passports, including the Visa page in each piece of luggage.
- Take with you a mini-maglite flashlight with a cord so that you can keep it around your neck with your hands free if you need to make a nocturnal visit to the restroom, when your train cabin's light does not work, and when you need to
pound on the door to attract the attention of the custodian because you have locked yourself in the cabin. These lights are also powerful enough to temporarily blind someone if they accost you and to read on the train sleeper and not disturb your bunkmates.
- Always buy all the empty bunks in your cabin on an overnight train ride. Usually the cost is minimal and well worth the
security, and privacy. The cost for the entire train cabin from Simferopol to Kiev was about $10 USD in 12/99.
- Have someone write down for you the address and phone number where you are staying in Ukraine and the name of someone to call in case of emergency.
- Carry this, and a list of emergency phone numbers for Consulate, Embassy, etc. at all times.
- Don't carry a regular handbag unless it can convert to a waist pack, handle goes diagonally over your chest, or converts to a backpack so your hands are free at all times. This is very important when you return with a child.
- Remember a few basic safety tips when carrying this money into Ukraine.
- NEVER have all of your money in the same place.
- If traveling with a partner, split the money between both of you.
- Wear a money belt for added protection, most feel more comfortable with the belt hidden inside their shirt.
- When purchasing a items in Ukraine, never show all your cash when making a purchase.
- Discretely pull out the amount you need, while your partner scans the crowd.
- Basically, when dealing with money in Ukraine, use common sense.
- At all times use common sense and do not do anything you would not do in any large American city to endanger yourself.
